Trans Awareness Month – “Staying in coming out”

Staying in coming out
A stately upper house in Amsterdam-Zuid. Here the past is cherished. Or perhaps: clung to. Leaving this place, after sixty years, is an obstacle for Paula. Because she carried a secret with her for a long time. No one knew. After years of struggling, she decided to crawl out of her egg.
Photographer Martin Hierck portrayed the life of the last resident. The daily routine. House cat Sil. The effort of letting go.
Jean-Pierre Geelen sketches Paula’s story in words. ‘Maybe that is what this house also stands for: that memories and emotions cannot be swept away. That you can leave a house, but not the life that is in it, because the foundations of history will always weigh on your shoulders.’ Paula herself also adds extra power to the photos that Martin took of her with her beautiful poetry.
November is Trans Awareness Month.
Unfortunately, we have recently seen a huge setback in the progress we have made in the field of LGBT+ emancipation. This is mainly due to the transphobia that originated in the US and is spreading across the world. Just think of the increasing violence against trans people, but also the Bud Light drama with Dylan Mulvaney from last year, and the fact that many large companies are currently rolling back their diversity policies. Sad signs.
It is good that we can therefore give extra attention to our trans fellow human beings once again in November. This can be done in many ways.
I would like to draw your attention to the beautiful book “Staying in coming out” that my colleague, photographer Martin Hierck, recently published with publisher Kyosei. He made a penetrating portrait of, and together with, trans woman Paula. The book was received enthusiastically, and was discussed by Humberto Tan op NPO Radio 1, Opium op Radio 4 and in de Volkskrant. uitgeverij Kyosei.
A book like this helps to draw attention to transgender people, and not just in November or around March 31 (International Transgender Day of Visibility).
Martin still has a few books from the first edition left, and would like to offer them this month with a big discount. I thought this could also be interesting for you and your members/visitors. See the text at the bottom of this message for a short impression. By the way, the book is bilingual (NL/Eng), but the most important are the impressive photos.
